Organ donation saves lives
The Transplant Trust welcomes the Organ Donor Taskforce decision to maintain the present system of opting-in to organ donation. The charity has, for many years, supported and raised awareness of the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register and campaigns continuously to ensure that figures continually increase. In a press release issued when the Taskforce reported, Health Secretary Alan Johnson stated that the government aims to have 25 miliion names on the Register by 2013, there are at present just over 15 million names, so that is an enormous target to achieve and we look forward to working closely with the Department of Health to help this goal to be achieved, particularly through National Transplant Week, which The Transplant Trust runs annually. Our plans for NTW 2009 are already well-advanced and we welcome new supporters so please get in touch if you would like to become involved either through fundraising or by holding an event to raise awareness.
Of course, once there are more organs available more and better retrieval facilities, and more Donor Transplant Co-ordinators will be needed and The Transplant Trust further welcomes the Taskforce's recommendations for increases in those areas. With a commitment to recruiting 63 new co-ordinators across the UK by March 2009 and a further commitment to establish a nationwide network of dedicated organ retrieval teams to ensure timely and high-quality removal of organs from viable donors the building blocks are being put in place to improve the UK system greatly. The work that The Transplant Trust is undertaking within its research programme will do much to support the taskforce recommendations. Research bids are now being accepted for future funding.
The Transplant Trust works in two main areas:
• to promote the need for more people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register
• to fund research into transplantation
